Watch messaging, round 2 — Ledger v2 vs Cards v2

Round 1 chose the bones; this board is the full flow in the two surviving skins. New since round 1: every canned message now states its consequence; B's privileged card is gone; incoming messages are a treadmill — read on top, answer below, one screen — with ops-authored reply chips; dictation is Apple's own UI returning through a Review gate; and every send opens a 5-second Undo before SENT / QUEUED / FAILED. The caption under each frame says when that screen appears.

SShared pattern — the incoming treadmill

Incoming messages behave identically in both variants: read on top, answer below, one screen. Scroll is the crown; the fold always clips mid-row, so nothing below it is a secret. Shown once here rather than duplicated per variant: the Ledger entry point (S1), the two incoming shapes (S2 with ops chips, S3 without), and the system-dictation handoff (S4). Only the skin of the reply options changes between A and B.

Appears when: your coordinator sends a message and attaches reply options. Options are ops-authored from the safe canned set — never AI-inferred. Read on top, answer below — one screen.

Reply
Done

Appears when: the coordinator attaches no reply options. Reply opens the canned list (Yes / No pinned first); Done returns to the Ledger.

S4 · System dictation (Apple’s UI)
System dictation
Apple’s watchOS dictation UI takes over here — live transcript, its own Done. We don’t draw or restyle it. It returns plain text to the Review screen.

Tap to start — the system listens and ends the take itself. Not hold-to-talk. Shown as a card: we don’t counterfeit Apple’s UI on a board.

Skin deltas: A renders reply chips as 44px hairline-top serif rows with the › in gold-ink; B renders them as 52px raised cards, serif centred, Yes/No paired on one row. Below the fold on both skins sit the remainder of the clipped chip and the standing Other reply… escape hatch (always present under ops chips — it opens the canned list). S3 is drawn in A-skin; in B the pinned Reply/Done rows become cards. S4 belongs to Apple in both.

ALedger v2 — serif rows, case-record calm

The canned list as case-record rows: serif line, hairline-top, 48px minimum — with a new Inter consequence line under every message so a shaking hand knows what each tap does before it does it. Dictation is a labelled bar (shown pressed), never a bare mic. The wrist stays a record, not a chat app.

Fold truth: five rows reach the first screenful; row 5 clips mid-row at the fold. Trade-off: quietest and densest of the two — but targets are 48px, not 52.

BCards v2 — big raised targets, no privileged card

The canned list as raised cards: 52px targets, radius 14, 6px gaps — and the round-1 oxblood primary is gone; all six messages are equals, each with the same Inter consequence line. Same treadmill, Review gate and Undo as A. Loudest targets, most forgiving under a shaking hand.

Fold truth: the 52px cards mean one fewer message per screenful — the honest fold lands on card 4, where A reaches row 5. Trade-off: biggest targets and clearest edges; the least record-like of the two.

?Open questions

  1. The 5s undo hold means every wrist message reaches ops at least 5 seconds late. Fine for ops SLA, or shorter (3s)? Defaulted to 5s.
  2. No message history on the wrist: once an incoming message is Done’d, re-reading it needs the phone. Acceptable for v1, or should the Ledger surface ‘last message from ELA’? Defaulted to no history.
